Benches for The Cells

Diary / Posted by Rich

Wearing my other hat as gallery tech I recently made some benches for The Cells at The Island in Bristol.

The benches cover the toilet and bed in the old police station cells and are designed to be removable, allowing the cells to be used as filming locations when required.

Decapod

AirSpace Gallery is celebrating its tenth birthday in March. As a long-time friend and exhibitor at the gallery I was asked to nominate an artist for their anniversary show. I chose Jo Lathwood.

The exhibition consists of ten artists nominated by ten people who have been involved with the gallery since its inception in 2006. The show opens on 4 March and continues until 2 April 2016. More info here.

Working From Home

Diary / Posted by Rich

For the past two weeks I have been helping artist Julie McCalden install her work ‘Working Form Home’ at the Museum of Bath at Work.

‘Engaging with the life of an early 20th century woman, Working from home camouflages signs of industrious activity within a domestic setting.
Embedding the tools and products of work within a turn-of-the-century dwelling, the work brings into focus everyday living and precarious labour through a historical lens.’

To Julie’s design I constructed a timber and board ‘room’ with three walls, like those found in the museum. The entire room and all of its contents were painstakingly covered with the same damask pattern.

The exhibition continues until 31 August.

A Day of Teaching

DiaryTalk / Posted by Rich

I’m going to be doing a days teaching on the HND fine art course at Birmingham Metropoliton College on Monday. I’ll be giving a talk about my work first thing in the morning, and then doing 1-to-1 tutorials for the rest of the day. Should be fun.
