Research & Development

Period of professional development supported by a grant awarded from Arts Council England.
Various locations: 20 June 2013 - 31 March 2014.

I produced three projects - in Newtown, Wembley and Birmingham - using different forms of public engagement in their development and creation. I also undertook mentoring from three arts professionals to help guide and develop my professional practice. The progress and outcomes of the various projects and fields of enquiry were documented on this blog.

Civic Space

Conversations today revealed the idea of a free, civic space in Wembley. Somewhere like Speakers’ Corner where people could freely express their ideas.

It was noted that Wembley doesn’t feel like it has a central square. A possible idea would be to create a Speaking Podium that allows a number of people to stand and have a conversion or debate on equal terms. This structure could be position in the square outside Wembley Central station (which is currently a little sparse) or incorporated into the Civic Centre.

Self-sufficiency

One of the really interesting conversations I had yesterday was with a gentleman who wanted somewhere to grow his own vegetables. His suggestion was that Wembley should have a city farm run by the community.

One of the recurring themes of my stay here has been the notion of more community and social activity - a city farm would be a wonderful addition to this.

So my thinking for how the project will progress is starting to focus on something that is useful, that has a purpose, and that people can use together.

The problem of somewhere to grow your own vegetables in an area of limited space inspired the idea of a rotating, stacked vegetable trough.

Some pictures of Wembley

To get people looking at Wembley slightly differently I’ve been taking some photographs of the area.
