Research & Development

Period of professional development supported by a grant awarded from Arts Council England.
Various locations: 20 June 2013 - 31 March 2014.

I produced three projects - in Newtown, Wembley and Birmingham - using different forms of public engagement in their development and creation. I also undertook mentoring from three arts professionals to help guide and develop my professional practice. The progress and outcomes of the various projects and fields of enquiry were documented on this blog.

Be Our Guest

The first project for my R&D period is ‘Be Our Guest’, an exhibition at Oriel Davies Gallery in Newtown, Wales.

This exhibition sees the gallery space transformed in a bed & breakfast with artists making work in response to the notion of the traditional B&B. For my work in I chose to focus on the idea of using the B&B as a way of getting away from it all. For my research I stayed at Yesterdays B&B in Newtown for two nights, talked with staff and residents about their experiences in B&Bs and asked them to write and draw their ideal ‘getting away from it all’ ideas.
